National Day Message by H. E. Mr. Christoph Eichhorn, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Republic of Bulgaria

Dear friends of the German Embassy in Sofia,

October 3 is a particularly special, happy day.

Exactly 30 years ago, Germany reunited. With this and the fall of the Berlin Wall, Europe was reborn. Since then, what belongs has been united again.

Bulgarians and Germans meet as free people, as free citizens in our European Union.

Our desire for freedom cannot be divided. The Brandenburg Gate, until then a symbol of division, has become a symbol of unity, justice and freedom.

These are words from the German national anthem. These are our common values.

We celebrate all this with our friends in Bulgaria.

Anniversary events in Sofia

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Unification, the German Embassy and Ambassador Christoph Eichhorn, together with Sofia Free Tour, made a historical tour of the capital under the motto "5 times B: Battenberg, Bauhaus, Brutalism, Berlin and Bulgaria - in the footsteps of Bulgarian-German history in Sofia".

On the occasion of the anniversary, Ambassador Christoph Eichhorn also opened the historical exhibition "Transformation in East. Life in Transition" on Lovers bridge behind the National Palace of Culture. The exhibition is dedicated to the first years after the proclamation of German unity in 1990 and focuses on the experience of the people of East Germany gained during the transition. Their lives, as well as the everyday life of the people in Eastern Europe, including Bulgaria, have changed radically since the historic turning point in 1989-1990. Its author is the historian and publicist Stefan Volle and it was published by the Federal Foundation for Reconsidering the GESP dictatorship together with the Federal Government's attorney for the new federal provinces. In Sofia, the exhibition is presented with the assistance of Sofia Municipality and can be viewed until October 18, 2020.

The material was provided by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Republic of Bulgaria.
