National Day Message by H. E. Mr. Dimitrios Chronopoulos, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hellenic Republic to the Republic of Bulgaria

On March 25 each year Greeks celebrate their National Day honoring the beginning of the Greek uprising for liberation from the Ottoman rule in 1821. This year we celebrate the Bicentennial of our National Revolution.

Inspired from the principles and the messages of the American and the French Revolutions Greeks fought for national independence, freedom and their right to live in a democratic society enjoying social rights. Freedom fighters from neighbouring nations, among them many Bulgarians, joined the Greek War of Independence.

The Greek revolutionary struggle inspired, in its term, the national awakening of the neighbouring nations in the Balkans suffering under the same foreign rule. They followed their own path leading to their national independence.

Today, Greece continues to play her own role as a modern progressive state, member of the European family, working together with her neighbours for a common peaceful and prosperous future.

The solid and friendly relations that Greece and Bulgaria have developed over the course of time are reflected today in the ever more profound and articulated collaboration in the political field, as well as in the economic and cultural domains. Throughout the years, this collaboration has evolved into a strategic partnership covering virtually all important policy areas of bilateral economic cooperation.

Today, Greece and Bulgaria, being members of the same group of interests, can coordinate more effectively in planning their joint future.

Long live the friendship between the Greek and the Bulgarian peoples.
