On August 15, H. E. Mr. Arun Kumar Sahu, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to the Republic of Bulgaria, hosted a reception in the "Diamond" Hall of Ramada Sofia Hotel on the occasion of the country’s national holiday.
This year, India celebrates its 79th Independence Day and 78 years of Independence. The reception was attended by officials, ambassadors, diplomats, representatives of the administration, business and media, as well as friends of India.
After the national anthems of India and Bulgaria were played, H. E. Mr. Arun Kumar Sahu addressed his guests with a solemn speech:
Today, we commemorate the 15th of August—India’s Independence Day. On this day in 1947, the people of India gained independence, fulfilling the dreams and sacrifices of countless freedom fighters. It serves as a reminder of the vision of leaders who dreamed of an India where liberty, equality, and fraternity would be the birthright of all citizens.
Over the past 78 years, India has transformed from a newly independent nation into the world’s largest democracy and one of the fastest-growing economies. We have advanced in science, technology, education, industry, and the arts, while remaining true to the values enshrined in our Constitution. Yet, our journey is only just beginning in realising our immense potential in the 21st century. India stands as one of the brightest beacons of hope and possibility.
India has emerged as the world’s fastest-growing major economy, a hub for technology, start-ups, and innovation. From pioneering digital payment systems reaching even the most remote villages, to launching interplanetary missions at a fraction of global costs, India has proven that ingenuity is not limited by resources, but driven by vision.
India is a young nation—half of its population is under 30. This youthful energy, combined with education, skills, and opportunity, is transforming our economy and enhancing our global influence. Its entrepreneurs, scientists, and artists are making their mark worldwide. And India’s rise is not solely economic; it also reflects our core values. In a time marked by uncertainty and division, India stands for democracy, pluralism, and dialogue. Unity in diversity remains a guiding principle.
India has also assumed a larger role on the world stage—championing climate action, leading emergency relief efforts, advocating for equitable global governance, and forging partnerships across continents.
India- Bulgaria
India and Bulgaria established diplomatic relations in 1954. Since then, we have built a partnership based on mutual trust and enriched by cultural, economic, and people-to-people exchanges. Over the decades, we have stood together in international forums, supported each other’s development goals, and celebrated our shared cultural heritage.
Economically, our bilateral trade and investment continue to grow, with opportunities expanding in sectors such as information technology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, tourism, and renewable energy. As both our nations embrace innovation and digital transformation, there is significant potential for collaborations that will benefit our citizens and support global growth.
Culturally, our nations share a profound appreciation for heritage and tradition. From the timeless wisdom of India’s ancient civilisation to Bulgaria’s rich folklore and traditions, our cultural ties remind us that while geography may separate us, shared human values bind us. Initiatives such as academic exchanges, Indology, cultural festivals, and artistic collaborations continue to deepen mutual understanding.
In multilateral cooperation, India and Bulgaria have worked constructively within the United Nations and other international platforms, advocating for peace, climate action, and inclusive development.
Friends!
As we celebrate India’s independence, I reaffirm India’s commitment to dialogue, mutual respect, and shared progress. May we grow together in peace, stability, and advancement, guided by the civilisational wisdom of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the World is one family.
Thank you.
After the inspiring speech of His Excellency, the emotions did not subside. The audience was left in awe of the dance artistry and the flawless performance of the Indian dance troupe Arupa Gayatri Panda & group.
