The Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark in the Republic of Bulgaria,
in partnership with the Department of Scandinavian Studies and the Hans Christian Andersen Centre for Research and Information at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", presented the poetry collection Anthology of Danish Poetry from the 17th to the 21st Century. The event took place on October 29, 2025, in the New Conference Hall of the university.
The anthology was published as part of the cultural program of Denmark’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union (July – December 2025) and embodies the ongoing dialogue between Danish and Bulgarian literature and culture. It offers a panoramic view of Danish poetry from the 17th to the 21st century, featuring emblematic poets and works that have shaped Denmark’s literary landscape - from the Baroque and Romanticism to Modernism and contemporary writing.
Compiled by Dr. Nadezhda Mihaylova, Head of the Department of Scandinavian Studies and of the Hans Christian Andersen Research and Information Centre at Sofia University, and by Morten Riber, lecturer in Danish at Sofia University (2021–2023), the anthology brings together, for the first time in Bulgarian translation, a wide spectrum of poetic voices—love lyric, odes, ballads, psalms, and pastoral verses - reflecting the spirit, emotions, and values of different eras in Danish culture.
The project, initiated by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark in Bulgaria, was carried out with the financial support of the Danish Arts Foundation.
At the event, H. E. Mr. Flemming Stender, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Denmark to the Republic of Bulgaria, presented the Anthology of Danish Poetry from the 17th to the 21st Century, spoke about the story behind its creation, and thanked all contributors for their years of dedicated work. He concluded his speech by reading the poem "Denmark, My Native Land" by Hans Christian Andersen.
The actor Petar Rusev read several poems from the anthology. Dr. Nadezhda Mihaylova and several of the translators shared their motivations for participating in the project, discussing the themes of Danish literature and its resonance within Bulgarian poetic culture.
The presentation of the poetry collection Anthology of Danish Poetry from the 17th to the 21st Century truly became an event dedicated to Danish poetry, cultural dialogue, and shared inspiration.
